Passed away on April 3, 1680, leaving behind a powerful empire and an immortal lagacy.
Shiva Ji Maharaj’s military genius was demonstrated through his guerrilla warfare tactics . He built a formidable empire by using surprise, speed, and agility, often using the geography of Western India to his advantage.
He built over 300 forts across Maharashtra, Gujarat, and parts of Karnataka, many of which remain symbols of his strategic brilliance. Famous forts include Raigad, Sinhagad, Lohagad, and Pratapgad.
He understood the importance of maritime strength, establishing a navy along the Konkan coast to protect the shores and trade routes. The Maratha Navy was a significant force in the Indian Ocean.
Shiva Ji implemented a progressive system of governance, focused on welfare, justice, and equal treatment. He promoted religious tolerance, ensuring that Hindus, Muslims, and other communities thrived under his rule.
Shiva Ji declared himself an independent ruler, breaking free from foreign rule. He chose Raigad Fort as his capital and was crowned in a grand Hindu ceremony. He took the title "Chhatrapati", meaning supreme sovereign, restoring Hindu self-rule (Hindavi Swarajya)
His administrative reforms were groundbreaking. He introduced the Ashta Pradhan council to aid in governance and established efficient systems for taxation, revenue collection, and military mobilization.
